Paris

After a lovely few days in the south of France we arrived in Paris!!

We explored near our apartment which is situated on a large boulevard with many restaurants and shops.

We walked a short distance to the Louvre museum. We’ll be visiting the museum before we leave. Then we walked along the park in front of the Louvre and down the seine for a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower.

Everybody wanted to take a picture on one of the blocks so they could do a cool perspective shot holding the pyramid or pricking the top of it.

Here is a very densely packed bridge of love locks near the Louvre. Lovers engrave or sharpie their names and date on a padlock, or sometimes combination lock, “lock their love” on a link in the fence or on someone else’s lock and then throw the key into the river for, supposedly, everlasting love.

In some areas the accumulation of locks has become too heavy and is starting to break down the fence and bridge.

IMG_3806.JPG

Glass is used to replace the broken areas, disallowing more locks. A movement with the slogan #lovewithoutlocks urges tourists to stop putting locks on the bridge to prevent further destruction of the historical bridge.

There is a small apartment at the top of the Eiffel Tower where Gustav Eiffel had meetings with important guests, such as Thomas Edison in September 1889.

Starting at 8pm the tower twinkles for 5 minutes every hour.

We had breakfast here twice because their food is superb. We talked to one of the waitresses and found out she is from Cypress, CA! It really is a small world, huh?

I could eat this everyday. Pancakes, fried eggs and bacon with maple syrup and bourbon butter!

We travelled to the 18th arrondissement of Paris to a big hill where we overlooked the city at the church Sacré Cœur (sacred heart).

It was a Saturday and a lot of people gathered here. Just up the stairs were vendors selling wine and food. It was very hard to walk through, shoulder to shoulder taking small steps when the person in front of us moved.

We ended up walking into a parade in Montmartre. It was a their annual Harvest Festival, a celebration of local wineries who have finished their harvest. There were marching bands and dancers. Different wine groups were pouring wine samples for the crowd in plastic cups and some handing out grape samples. Apparently the guy in blue is someone famous or well known in France. People were taking photos of him and with him. People were giving him kisses on the cheeks. Some women kissed him on the lips and some men too. We tried looking him up but couldn’t find any information on him.

On our way back to our flat we accidentally walked by the Moulin Rouge. The street it resides on is filled with sex shops and strip clubs.
